 Maryland’s Tax Ranking

  • Maryland ranks 45th out of 50 States.
(this is an overall rating; in 2008 our ranking was 24th)

    How Was This Accomplished?

-Liberal tax and spend legislature, led by Gov. O’Malley raised most of the major taxes in fiscal year 2009.

-Corporate income tax raised from 7% to 8.25%

-Sales tax raised from 5% to 6%

-Personal income tax rate raised from 4.75% to 6.25%

-plus a weighted average local option rate of 2.98%

-Four new income tax brackets on filers earning more than $150,000/year

-Cigarette excise tax raised from $1.00 to $2.00 per pack

Maryland currently has the worst ranking on personal income tax in the United States, beating out California for the number one spot!
